Kanō Hōgai, a leading figure
in a new movement inspired by Fenollosa to revitalize Japanese
painting, created Merciful Mother Kannon to manifest human
compassion. This tapestry is a reproduction Hōgai’s masterpiece
using the latest textile techniques and technology. |

The consummate example of Willow Kannon with a transformed buddha in
his crown, a willow branch in the right hand, and water vessel in
the left, this statuette imparts the resplendent air of the high
Tang dynasty. Hōgai chose this Kannon, who cures illnesses and
nurtures life, as an image that gives birth to children.
