Kanō Hōgai, a leading figure in a new movement inspired by Fenollosa to revitalize Japanese painting, created Merciful Mother Kannon to manifest human compassion. This tapestry is a reproduction Hōgai’s masterpiece using the latest textile techniques and technology.

The consummate example of Willow Kannon with a transformed buddha in his crown, a willow branch in the right hand, and water vessel in the left, this statuette imparts the resplendent air of the high Tang dynasty. Hōgai chose this Kannon, who cures illnesses and nurtures life, as an image that gives birth to children.
