The 18th-century Kyoto painting scene consisted of dynamic
individualistic artists such as Itō Jakuchū, Ike no Taiga, and Maruyama
Ōkyo. Among them, Yosa Buson (1716–1783)—like the poet Matsuo Bashō and
the painter Ike no Taiga—was highly regarded and incorporated haikai
(comic linked verses) into painting to create his own distinctive style.
This exhibition presents approximately 150 objects including Buson’s paintings and haikai-related materials as well as his correspondence to his pupils and friends. Enjoy Buson’s fascinating world of painting and poetry. |
